VIDEO: Super King Market to Take Over Former Gelson's Northridge Location
Growing supermarket chain to enter the crowded Valley grocery scene.
A new supermarket is coming to the Valley. Where Gelson's departed from the southwest corner of Plummer Street and Shirley Avenue in Northridge, Super King will be arriving.
The Gelson's liquor license has been transfered to B & V Enterprises for the store at 19500 Plummer St.
B & V Enterprises currently operates four Super King Markets at 2716 N. San Fernando Rd. in Los Angeles, and also in Anaheim, Altadena and Claremont. Super King Markets began in 1993 in Anaheim, and feature "produce, fresh meat, and a wide variety of national and international grocery brands," according to their website. The stores also offer "service deli items, a full variety of spirits, wine and beer. Los Angeles and Altadena stores also feature a full service restaurant, hot foods and fresh bakery."

Super King is entering a competitive North Valley supermarket scene where grocery departments have been added to local stores as well as in Porter Ranch. A new market opened in Granada Hills where a Sprouts market also recently opened. In addition, there's a Fresh & Easy near the Northridge Fashion Square mall. There's a Whole Foods and Ralphs Fresh Fare in Porter Ranch. There are also and Vallarta stores in Northridge. And there's . Chatsworth has a , and . And Jon's and Food4Less are nearby.
In recent years, the area has seen the departure of Hughes, Alpha-Beta, Dales, Lucky, Thrifty-Mart, HOWS and Safeway (which returned with the purchase of Vons). Currently, supermarkets are battling for customers with changes in their coupon policies, affinity clubs and gasoline discounts.

The Northridge Gelson's market closed because of sagging profits. "At the end of the day, no matter which way we looked at it, the numbers just did not pencil out for us," market-operator Arden Group Senior Vice President Brenda McDaniel told the Daily News when the store closed.
She said the 36,815-square-foot store opened in 1997 and had 60 employees who all accepted transfers to the company's other stores.
