Election Results: Northridge South Neighborhood Council

Neighborhood Council elections begin in Northwest San Fernando Valley.

Balloting for contested seats on Neighborhood Councils in the Northwest Valley began Thursday and continue Saturday.

At Northridge Middle School, 107 stakeholders signed-in to vote, New England Town Hall style, in a real demonstration of grass-roots democracy. Of the 95 Neighborhood Councils in Los Angeles, about 88 are voting for new board members this year.

The Northridge South Neighborhood Council was the first in Region 2 to vote. Clusters of councils will be voting at different times across the city during the following weeks.

The Northridge South balloting was classified as a "selection," rather than an election. Councilmembers were "selected" by community members who raised their hands to vote with scraps of colored paper, signifying their candidate choices at a Town Hall meeting. The papers were collected and counted by independent volunteers from other councils.

Most councils will have traditional elections on Saturday where stakeholders can go to polling places [see list below] and mark their choices on ballots.
