It's A Little Too Close For Comfort For Chatsworth in 35-28 Football Win Over Panorama

The Chancellors prevail in the City Div. II quarterfinals after nearly blowing a 28-point halftime lead.

Chatsworth High lives to see another day after defeating visiting Panorama 35-28 on Friday in the City Section Div. II football quarterfinals, but it was not pretty, as the host Chancellors nearly blew a 28-point lead.

"Man, what a great first half, and what a horrible second half," Chatsworth coach Jason Camp said. "I could tell at halftime when we were up 35-7 that they thought it was over, and I told them Panorama was a second-half team. My guys hung in there and got the win, and that's the big thing."

In the end, Chatsworth's defense came through, as Brandon Poitan registered a game-saving sack, and the Chancellors held Panorama to zero yards passing.

"I never had a sack like that. Never one that big. I feel great," Poitan said.

Chatsworth (10-2) plays host to Palisades (7-5) at 7 p.m. Friday in the semifinals.

What made Panorama's second-half rally all the more improbable was the Pythons did it without star running back Malcolm Thomas, who scored on a 30-yard run on the first series but was injured in the second quarter and did not return.

Chatsworth's Curtis Ervin completed 10 of 11 passes for 148 yards, including a 76-yard touchdown to Jordan Osburn, and Ervin also scored two touchdowns.

"The first half felt great, but I think we got overconfident," Ervin said. "I think next time we're up like that, we'll win it by a lot."

D'ondre Alexander added 101 yards on 10 carries, including a 51-yard touchdown.

"I just have to give it up to the fans and to our line for keeping us in this game," Alexander said. "Hopefully they can come out next week and we can do it again. I'm definitely ready for next week."

I went to this game as a neutral observer ( I am a JV and varsity football announcer and statistician at Locke High School in South LA) that I am and I came away happy as a clam. Chatsworth just had too much firepower for Panorama and a decent enough defense to keep the Pythons from doing so much damage as to eventually win the game. Head Coach Jason Camp is a perfectionist and I'm glad he is that way because Chatsworth needs that to keep their engine running to East LA College for the DII title game. Good luck Chatsworth!

These are the players who impressed me from the Chancellors:
1.) RB/DB D'ondre Alexander-that kid is either a JC or four-year college prospect he is so exciting to watch with his quick hips and speed.
2.) LB Jimmy Markloff- a heck of an athlete who was everywhere. I would love to see him play at LAVC or Pierce. Has the speed and athletcism to play in the secondary.
3.) OL/DL Dylan Murrieta-Has a solid motor and is a disciplined blocker.
4.) LB/Center Matthew Santos- This kid seemed to have every tackle for Chatty on the night. He was fun to watch. A solid blocker too.
5.) DL Brandon Poitan- A heck of a motor on this kid who had the game of his life.
6.) Germain Quitlong OL/DL- I loved his motor and discipline on both sides of the ball.
