11 Candidates File for Council District 12 Seat
Councilman Greig Smith will be stepping down when his term expires. The election is set for March 8, 2011.
Eleven candidates filed by the Saturday deadline to succeed retiring District 12 City Councilman Greig Smith in the 2011 Primary Election.
The election will be March 8, with a runoff on May 17 if no candidate wins a majority of the vote. The 7 even-numbered City Council district seats are up for election. There are 15 seats on the Council.
Here's how the election works. First, candidates file with the city clerk their intention to run. Then they circulate nomination petitions through Dec. 8.
When candidates collect 1,000 to 2,000 valid signatures of registered voters within their district, they qualify for the ballot. However, if they gather 500 to 1,000 signatures they can pay a $300 filing fee to get on the ballot.

You will find statements on issues, a biography, and ways to volunteer and support for this effort, which is a truly grass-roots campaign.
I was born and raised here, and I want to see real positive change – which is why I would like your help in the race for Council District 12 on the March ballot. District 12 is at a crossroads: We must decide whether to protect and maintain single-family residential neighborhoods, or allow unlimited development. The current leadership has given us decades of over-development and traffic, and only paid lip service to residents’ concerns. It is time for a change.
As lifelong residents of the northwest San Fernando Valley, my wife Maria and I have done our best to try and maintain our neighborhood as the kind of community we grew up in: a safe and quiet middle class neighborhood within the city of Los Angeles.
Angelenos need to fight to protect our communities at every level, from the neighborhood councils to City Hall. That is why I am involved, and that is why I would appreciate your support for Los Angeles City Council District 12.
Best,
Brad

Thank you for covering the race in CD 12! As it is the informed voters who can cast an educated vote and bring in the positive change needed... for the next 12 years!
As stated above we are in the phase of collecting our qualifying signatures, just FYI, any registered voter within the district can sign the petition for our CD 12 City Council race candidates, the same individual can sign more than one candidate’s petition, and the signature would qualify for each candidate separately.
If you would like to sign my petition or help out with gathering a few signatures as well, please contact me at chelebian@aol.com or 818-772-8173. Also please visit my campaign website to learn more ... www.ArminehChelebian.com or www.ChelebianLA.com

Thank you for covering the race in CD 12.
I hope your coverage will be informative and useful to the voters.
Our current economic crisis is the number one concern of every American. It is time we exercise our constitutional right.
It is a government by the people for the people. It makes no difference whether you are a Democrat, Republican, Libertarian or any other political affiliation, and it is time America’s citizens take control of their country starting from the city government to the county, state and the federal government. All elected officials must be accountable to their community and its residents. Our current budget crisis was brought about by the current administration – do you want this to continue and lose city services. I am a soldier in the battle to restore fiscal sanity for our district and our city, improve the economic well being of the district and the welfare of all residents.
Capitalism has not failed. The people in charge of the economy have failed Capitalism!!!!! Capitalism has been hijacked by career politicians, who disguise themselves as representatives of the people.
Enough is enough; we need to replace as many incumbents as possible, business as usual must stop here and now, government treasury should not be the personal piggy bank of the politicians.
We have the manpower and technology, let us utilize it.
“Transparency and accountability is my motto”
Thank you

To the voters.. I implore you to vote for a "business" person, not the police force.. Example of the reason for my comment.. I live in Canoga Park. Took Chase/ Ecles to work every morning to B of A center on Fall brook. New sign was posted over the weekend to not make a right turn. 3 Cops sitting and waiting for the offenders. Now mind you the sign was just put there. Cop stops us. Says, " I lived in this neighborhood and was raised here." I said, "I happen to live 4 blocks up. I never saw the sign sorry." He says, " well we are cleaning this place up".. I said, " please I have never had a ticket, I am asking can you just give me a warning"? "I wont make the mistake again".. "I work right here." "I live 4 blocks up, this neighborhood is a middle class upscale neighborhood and I am not trying to do wrong. I am a 58 year old man who owns a home here." He says, "well the city needs the money, sorry, have a nice day." and hands me the ticket... I was floored to say the least.. Funny, have you ever seen Farralone at the hours of 7am to 9am and 4pm to 6pm? Its a race way of speeds up to 75mph.. Never a cop on this street,, NEVER.. Why you ask? Ask your CD12 rep... It's used as a cut through for Topanaga and Roscoe so they don;t have to wait for the light... So when it comes to certain career oriented person representing your interest, I don't think so.... VOTE for the business man or woman, not the union backed politician..

While I can appreciate your frustration, Bernie, I don't know that electing a business person would solve it. We're in tough times and departments are scrambling for money. Once budgets come back, I'm sure they'll forget your neighborhood exists all over again.

Dear Mr. Miller -
Thank you for caring enough about the economic health of our city to comment; your points about economic development are well-taken. Los Angeles needs to take advantage of the fact that because of our publicly-owned power system, rates are (at least according to DWP) supposed to be ~20 percent lower than those communities supplied by private utilities. One would think would be a major advantage for Los Angeles in terms of keeping and attracting businesses, especially manufacturing, but it seems the current leadership in City Hall, even if they are doing their best, can't quite make it happen. I have worked in the private sector almost my entire life, for companies that include Fortune 500; maybe that is what is needed to start making the right things happen in Los Angeles.
Best,
Brad Smith
